Three Men, Their Mountains and The Birth of the Wilderness Movement in the US
On Thursday, August 14, at 5 pm, the Old Forge Library, located at 220 Crosby Blvd., will host its weekly Local History and Stories Series. This week’s featured program, “Exploitation, Exploration, and Expeditioning: Three Men, Their Mountains, and the Birth of the Wilderness Movement in the U.S.” will be presented by Dr. Thomas Welch.
Dr. Welch’s presentation will explore three key forces that have shaped the history of the Adirondacks: Exploitation, represented by David Henderson and the MacIntyre Iron Works; Exploration, as seen through the groundbreaking Adirondack survey work of Verplanck Colvin; and Expeditioning, embodied by Bob Marshall, one of the original "Forty-Sixers" and a pioneer of wilderness appreciation and advocacy both in the Adirondacks and across the country.
A lifelong hiker, camper, and climber, Dr. Welch is a licensed Adirondack guide and wilderness survival instructor with extensive first hand experience in the region. He is also an amateur historian with a particular interest in early Adirondack exploration and industry. In addition to his outdoor and historical pursuits, Welch is a semi-retired pediatrician. More information about his work can be found on his website, AdironDoc.com.
The Local History and Stories Series is presented by the Town of Webb Historical Association and features a different speaker each week discussing engaging topics related to local history. Each event includes a presentation followed by an informal discussion. The series is free and open to the public, and all are encouraged to attend, listen, and share their own stories.
