On Thursday, August 8, at 5 pm the Town of Webb Historical Association's popular Local History Series will feature Derrick Pratt presenting Clinton’s Ditch: Basics of the Erie Canal. The presentation will be held at the Old Forge Library, 220 Crosby Blvd., Old Forge.
The Erie Canal is a historic canal in upstate New York that runs east–west between the Hudson River and Lake Erie. Completed in 1825, the canal was the first navigable waterway connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes. Why was the Erie Canal built? How was it built? How was it used once it was built? Where is it now? Pratt will answer all these questions and more in this crash course on “Clinton’s Ditch.”
Derrick Is the Director of Education & Public Programming at the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse, NY. A native of Chittenango, NY, Derrick received a B.A. in Social Studies Education from SUNY Cortland and a M.A. from Syracuse University. Prior to his job at the Erie Canal Museum, he served as Director of Programs at the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum.
Every Thursday this summer the Local History Series features a different speaker presenting a local history subject. The public is invited to come and enjoy the talks, ask questions, and share related information. The series is free and open to the public.
